  8. INTRODUCTION: IS IMA LEECH IN?
  9.  
  10. So I'm a leech, sue me. I mean, when you're on a board like
  11. Rune Stone BBS, you HAVE to be a leech. Boards like Rune Stone,
  12. are what turned me into a kn0wledge phreak in the first place.
  13. I mean, you log-in, you hit 'A' to advance past the stats. Out 
  14. of respect for the SysOp, you hit 'R' and read through a few 
  15. messages, and even 'P'ost 1 or 2, but behind all of these 
  16. superfluous actions, the energy which is charging you...the energy
  17. which has prompted you to make a cross-country call during 
  18. business hours on a Wednesday...is the Philes. 
  19.  
  20. The Philes...What's new today? What am I gonna learn about this 
  21. time? You  hit 'N' and the New Files scroll past your anticpating 
  22. eyes seemingly forever. With every new screen is at least a half
  23. a dozen Philes you never heard of and must have. Some are too good 
  24. to be true:

  33. In the back of your mind you know it's a sham because the files only 
  34. 3k long and 2.5k of it's GOTTA be SPAM. But you  say "Fuck it!, I 
  35. gotta check it out." You hit SPACE a coupla times  and ad it to the 
  36. Batch. Finally once you've filled you're Batch up....'D', it's like 
  37. heaven.  You're slightly annoyed by the following questions, but you 
  38. just [CR] past them.  You're looking so a forward to your new found 
  39. bundles of informational joy, you're only slightly pissed that for 
  40. some reason you only connected at 14.4k...during business hours....
  41. on Wednesday. When you're download is through, you hit 'G' and then 
  42. 'G' again and you're outta there. And for me, even before I've dropped 
  43. carrier, I've got the first file open and I'm reading through it. The
  44. experience is almost religious.

  51.  your Long Distance Operator for assistance. [click]"

  59. That was the day my heart sank. I'll never forget it, Monday, November
  60.  6, 1995, 10:28am. I remember going into a  slight panic attack, but 
  61. then calmly reclaiming my wits. I said, 
  62. "alright, it said to call the Operator. Lets see...Hello Operator, 
  63. could you connect me to 203-832-8441?" 
  64.  
  65. Boy, what a relief it was to hear that carrier. 
  66.  
  67. "I'll just enter ATA....whoa! Connect you fuckin thing! What the fuck
  68. ....[click] Operator could you connect me to.."
  69.  
  70. And that was the way of the walk for that day. After three tries I 
  71. gave up and for three weeks went through withdrawls from Rune Stone
  72. BBS. Finally I couldn't take it any more.

  113. security. ;> But that's alright...and this would have been then end
  114. of this little adventure except for one little tidbit that reared it's
  115. ironic head the very next day:

  122.          Now Caller ID Work With LONG DISTANCE TOO...

  124.      Caller ID has always been the perfect way for identifying
  125.   callers before you pick up the phone. Now it's going to be
  126.   even better. That's because on December 1st, 1996, long 
  127.   distance carriers will pass caller information to your Caller ID
  128.   unit. you will be able to see who's calling from most locations
  129.   There will be some calls that will display as "Out of Area,"
  130.   due to technical configurations.
  131.      Callers can block information from being passed by pressing
  132.   *67 (1167 on rotary phones) before the place the call. This is 
  133.   per call blocking.
  134.      TO UNBLOCK A BLOCKED LINE, FOR ONE CALL ONLY, CALLERS JUST
  135.   PRESS *82 (1182 on rotary phones). Of course, your current 
  136.   blocking capabilities will not change. For more information call
  137.   US WEST or your long distance carrier.
